What is Oncology Massage?

Oncology massage is not standard massage with lighter pressure. It's a specialised form of therapeutic bodywork that is adapted — at every stage and in every session — to meet the specific needs of a body going through cancer treatment or recovery.

Elena has specific training in oncology massage and understands how cancer and its treatments — surgery, chemotherapy, radiation, immunotherapy — affect the body. She knows what is safe, what to avoid, and how to adapt her approach to give you the most supportive, beneficial session possible given exactly where you are in your journey.

This is not a luxury. It's care. And you deserve it.

A note: Oncology massage at Meraki is available to people at any stage — currently in treatment, in recovery, in remission, or living with cancer long-term. Every session is adapted specifically to you.

WHO IT'S FOR
Who comes to see Elena for oncology massage

Oncology massage is for anyone whose body and life has been touched by cancer — at any point in that journey.

During Active Treatment

Chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy take a significant toll on the body. Oncology massage — adapted carefully to your treatment stage — can reduce nausea, fatigue and anxiety, and support your body through the process.

Post Surgery Recovery

After lumpectomy, mastectomy, lymph node removal or other cancer surgeries, the body needs gentle, knowledgeable support. Elena works carefully around surgical sites, drains and healing tissue.

Managing lymphoedema

Lymph node removal or damage can cause lymphoedema — swelling in the arms, legs or other areas. Elena's training in manual lymphatic drainage makes her uniquely qualified to support this.

Post treatment recovery

Treatment ends — but the physical effects don't always. Fatigue, neuropathy, scar tissue, joint pain and body image changes are all part of recovery. Oncology massage supports the whole of this.

Living with Cancer long-term

For people living with cancer as a chronic condition, regular massage can meaningfully improve quality of life — reducing pain, anxiety and fatigue while providing a space of genuine care and presence.

Carers & loved ones

The toll of supporting someone through cancer is real. If you're a carer needing restoration, Meraki is here for you too.

OUR TREATMENTS
What happens in a
myotherapy session?

01

Before you arrive

A detailed intake form covering your diagnosis, treatment history, medications, surgical sites and any specific concerns. This is not just a formality — it's how Elena keeps you safe.

02

A real conversation

Your first session includes time for Elena to ask questions, understand your current experience and talk through what you most need from the session. There's no rush. You set the pace.

03

Your adapted treatment

Using only what is appropriate for your body right now. This might be very gentle effleurage, light lymphatic work, specific focused massage to areas of tension — always adapted, always listening. You remain completely in control.

04

Ongoing support

Elena can work alongside your oncology team. She's experienced in communicating with medical practitioners and can adapt your sessions as your treatment changes.

THE BENEFITS

What research tells us about oncology massage

Oncology massage is increasingly recognised within mainstream cancer care as a meaningful supportive therapy. Research shows it can:

  • Reduce anxiety and depression in people undergoing cancer treatment

  • Significantly reduce perceived pain and discomfort

  • Decrease treatment-related fatigue

  • Improve sleep quality — often one of the first things to deteriorate

  • Reduce nausea associated with chemotherapy

  • Support lymphatic function and reduce lymphoedema symptoms

  • Improve overall quality of life and sense of wellbeing

  • Provide a sense of safety, care and presence in a deeply uncertain time

We'll always be honest about what massage can and can't do. It's not a treatment for cancer. But it can make the experience of living with and through cancer meaningfully better.
