PRE-BIRTH ACUPUNCTURE
Prepare like an athlete.
Birth like a warrior.
Labour is one of the most physically and emotionally demanding events of your life. The women who feel most supported going into it aren't the ones who just waited — they're the ones who prepared.
Pre-birth acupuncture at Meraki Holistic Health is a series of weekly sessions in the final weeks of pregnancy designed to prepare your cervix, optimise baby's position, regulate your nervous system and give you the best possible foundation for the birth you're hoping for.
We don't force labour. We don't override your body's wisdom. We simply create the conditions — physical, hormonal and energetic — for birth to unfold as naturally and efficiently as possible.
01 Cervical Ripening
Specific acupuncture points encourage cervical softening and ripening from 36 weeks — supporting your body to be ready when labour begins.
02 Baby's Position
Acupuncture and moxibustion support optimal fetal positioning — and can help turn a breech baby when used between 33–36 weeks
03 Nervous System
A calm, regulated nervous system supports more efficient contractions and a shorter labour. Acupuncture is one of the most effective ways to prepare it.
04 Evidence- Based
Clinical research supports significant reductions in induction rates, epidural use and emergency caesarean delivery with pre-birth acupuncture.

BEYOND LABOUR PREPARATION
We treat the whole
late-pregnancy picture
Labour preparation sessions also address the physical challenges of the final trimester — because arriving at birth well-rested, pain-free and emotionally supported makes everything easier.
Insomnia & Sleep
Disruption
Waking repeatedly, unable to get comfortable or switch off a busy mind. Acupuncture is highly effective at supporting sleep quality in late pregnancy without medication.
Pelvic Girdle & Back Pain
Lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain and symphysis pubis discomfort are extremely common in the third trimester. Acupuncture provides meaningful relief and helps you move into labour without carrying this extra burden.
Anxiety & Mental Preparation
Fear of birth, anxiety about the unknown, the weight of anticipation — these are real and valid. Acupuncture regulates the nervous system and we hold space for the emotional dimensions of birth preparation as carefully as the physical ones.
Breech & Posterior Presentation
Moxibustion and acupuncture for breech presentation at 33–36 weeks has strong clinical evidence. For posterior babies, specific points and positioning advice help encourage optimal engagement before labour begins.
Heartburn & Digestion
Persistent heartburn, nausea and digestive discomfort in the final weeks. Acupuncture addresses the underlying Stomach and Spleen Qi patterns that drive these symptoms — often providing rapid relief.
Swelling & Fluid Retention
Oedema in the legs, feet and ankles is common in late pregnancy. Acupuncture and now MLD at Meraki both support healthy fluid circulation — reducing swelling and heaviness before birth.
YOUR WEEK-BY-WEEK GUIDE
When to start —
and what happens when
Every woman's timeline is slightly different — but here is the general framework we use at Meraki. We'll personalise your plan at your first session.
Breech Presentation Window
If your baby is in a breech or transverse position, this is the optimal window to act. Moxibustion on acupuncture point BL-67 — the little toe — has strong evidence for encouraging baby to turn to the optimal head-down position while there is still room to move.
The earlier in this window you come, the more time and space there is. Don't wait until 37 weeks and hope for the best.

WEEKS
Begin pre-birth acupuncture
This is the ideal time to start your weekly labour preparation sessions. We begin with a thorough assessment of where you are physically and emotionally — your constitution, your baby's position, your energy levels, your fears and hopes about birth.
Your birth partner is warmly welcome at this first appointment. We will teach specific acupressure points they can use to support you during each stage of labour — giving them something practical and empowering to do when it matters most.

WEEKS
Weekly sessions — building momentum
Weekly sessions continue with increasing focus on cervical ripening, pelvic circulation and nervous system regulation. We address any late-pregnancy symptoms — lower back pain, pelvic girdle pain, insomnia, heartburn, swelling — alongside the birth preparation work.
We gently build the treatment intensity as you move toward full term — nourishing and readying without forcing, so your body feels supported and your mind feels calm.

WEEKS
Full term — induction acupuncture added
Once you reach full term, sessions increase to twice weekly and we add specific induction acupuncture points alongside the preparation work. These points — particularly SP6, ST36, LI4, BL60 and BL67 — support the hormonal cascade that initiates labour naturally.
For high-risk pregnancies, planned caesareans or medically recommended induction, we adjust the treatment protocol accordingly and work in full coordination with your midwife or obstetrician.

THE RESEARCH
Evidence-based.
Not just evidence-informed.
35%
Reduction in induction rates
Betts & Lennox (2006) found a 35% reduction in induction of labour for women who received pre-birth acupuncture — with a 43% reduction in first-time mothers specifically.
31%

The same landmark study found a 31% reduction in epidural use and a 32% reduction in emergency caesarean delivery rates among women receiving pre-birth acupuncture.
97.5%
Would recommend to others
A 2025 Australian survey of 89 women found that 97.5% would recommend pre-birth acupuncture to friends and family — and 75.3% scored their experience a perfect 10 out of 10.
88%
Reported genuine birth readiness
88.2% of women in the 2025 Australian study reported positive benefits toward psychological and physiological labour readiness — a finding with significant implications for clinical practice.
