What Actually Happens at Your First Appointment? A Genuine Behind-the-Scenes Look

For many people, the biggest barrier to booking isn't cost or location it's not knowing what to expect. The unknown feels uncomfortable, especially when you're already dealing with pain or stress.
So let's fix that. Here's exactly what happens when you come in for the first time whether you're booked in for acupuncture, massage, or energy healing.

Before your appointment
You'll receive a short intake form ahead of your visit. For massage clients, this covers your current concerns, medical history, medications, and any areas you'd prefer the therapist to avoid.
For acupuncture, we'll also ask about your sleep, digestion, menstrual cycle (where relevant), and energy levels because in Chinese medicine, these all offer important diagnostic information.
For energy healing, the form is lighter we'll simply ask about what's brought you in and anything you'd like to focus on or release.
The form takes about five minutes and means your practitioner arrives in the room already prepared, rather than spending half your session on admin.
When you arrive
You don't need to do anything special. Wear comfortable clothing you can move in or change into a gown if you prefer. Your practitioner will come out to greet you, take a moment to settle in, and then talk through your intake form together.
This conversation is genuinely important. We're not just checking boxes. We want to understand not just where it hurts, but how it's affecting your daily life, what you've already tried, and what feeling better would actually look like for you.
The treatment itself
For massage: you'll lie on a comfortable, heated table covered with a sheet throughout. Your practitioner will check in about pressure — this should never feel like something you have to 'survive'. Therapeutic pressure can be firm, but it shouldn't be sharp or distressing.
For acupuncture: needles are hair-thin and most clients barely feel them going in. Once the needles are in place, you'll rest quietly for 20–30 minutes. This is genuinely one of the most relaxing parts of many people's week; phones away, no demands, just rest.
For energy healing: you'll lie fully clothed on a treatment table in a warm, calm room. Your practitioner will gently place their hands on or just above different areas of your body, allowing energy to flow. There's nothing you need to do, no right or wrong way to experience it.
Many clients feel a deep warmth, a sense of release, or simply fall into the most restful state they've had in weeks.
After your session
You may feel immediately lighter, looser, or calmer. Some people feel a little tired that's normal, particularly after acupuncture or energy healing, and it passes. We'll recommend you drink water, avoid alcohol for 24 hours if possible, and take it gently for the rest of the day.
We'll also talk through what we found, what we're working toward, and how many sessions we'd recommend to get you there.
One more thing
You don't need to arrive knowing the right words or having a clear diagnosis. Coming in and saying 'I don't feel right and I can't explain it' is absolutely fine. We hear that regularly and it's often where the most meaningful work begins.d I can't explain it' is absolutely fine. We hear that regularly — and it's often where the most meaningful work begins.
