How Long Until I Feel Better? A Realistic Treatment Timeline Guide

"How many sessions will I need?" is one of the most common questions we hear and one of the most poorly answered on most clinic websites.

Vague non-answers like 'it depends on the individual' are technically true but not very helpful.

So here's a more honest attempt. While every body is different, there are patterns we see regularly. This guide gives you realistic ballpark timelines for some of the most common reasons people come to see us.

One important caveat upfront

These timelines assume consistent treatment turning up regularly and following any between-session advice. Coming once a month and expecting the results of weekly treatment isn't a realistic plan. We'll always be transparent with you about what's actually required to get where you want to go.

Acute muscle tension or injury (e.g. stiff neck, sore lower back, post-event muscle soreness)

Timeline: 1–3 sessions, sometimes just one.

For genuinely acute issues; something that came on recently and hasn't become chronic — massage can often provide significant relief very quickly. If you've had a particularly intense week at your desk or pushed hard in a training session, a single well-targeted session can reset things substantially.

Chronic pain or recurring tension (e.g. the same shoulder problem that keeps coming back)

Timeline: 4–8 sessions, typically weekly to start.

Chronic issues have usually built up over months or years. There's often a postural or movement pattern contributing to the problem, which means the work isn't just releasing tension — it's retraining how your body holds itself. Expect meaningful improvement within 4 sessions, with the goal of spacing out appointments as you stabilise.

Stress, anxiety, and poor sleep

Timeline: 4–6 sessions before assessing.

Acupuncture for nervous system regulation tends to work cumulatively — each session builds on the last. Many clients notice improved sleep quality after their first or second session, but mood and stress resilience typically take a little longer to shift. We generally recommend weekly sessions for 4–6 weeks before reviewing.

Hormonal conditions (PCOS, irregular cycles, period pain, perimenopause)

Timeline: 3 full menstrual cycles as a minimum.

Hormonal work happens on the body's own schedule which means it's measured in cycles, not sessions. Three months of consistent treatment is the standard starting point before we can properly evaluate what's working. This can feel like a long time, but it reflects the reality of how hormonal regulation works. Many women notice incremental improvements throughout; lighter periods, less pain, better moods in the lead-up — before the big picture shifts.

Timeline: Start 3 months before IVF or preferred conception window.

Egg maturation takes approximately 90 days, which is why fertility acupuncture is most effective when started well before you need it. That said, if you're already mid-cycle or mid-IVF, starting now is still worthwhile — later is better than not at all. We'll work with whatever timeline you have.

Relaxation and general maintenance

Timeline: Ongoing, at whatever frequency works for your life.

Not everyone comes to us with a specific problem to solve. Many of our regular clients come monthly (or more frequently when things are demanding) as part of how they manage their overall wellbeing. There's no minimum or maximum — you set the rhythm.

A final note on results

Progress rarely happens in a straight line. Many people notice an improvement after their first session, then feel a bit flat again before the next one. That's normal; it's part of the process, not a sign it isn't working. We'll check in with you regularly, adjust our approach if needed, and always give you an honest picture of where things are heading.

If you're not feeling any benefit after the expected number of sessions, we'll tell you and where possible, we'll refer you to someone better placed to help.
